Golf grips
Most people will choose a new golf club and happily take the grip that came installed as being right for them. In many cases this will be acceptable - at least the grip will be new and that really helps with keeping good contact between the hand and the grip and stops unwanted slipping or twisting.
However, we all have slightly different hand sizes and finger sizes and stregth and thickness of our hands. It is definetly worth checking out some alternatives before you buy just to make sure you wouldn't benefit from a non-standard grip.
Most Golf Professionals, fitting centres or retail Golf stores will be able to fit or order clubs with your specification grip and in many cases at no extra cost.
How to choose the correct size grip?
The size of grip and having an incorrect grip can adversely effect your game.
If you use a grip that is too small you may tend to close the clubface too much or quickly through impact resulting in a shot that goes to the left (assuming right-handed stance and swing) e.g. pull, draw or hook.
Likewise if the grip is too big for your hands then this may delay release through impact resulting in an open clubface and shots that go to the right e.g. push, fade, slice
There are some excellent online resources from major golf grip manufacturers and suppliers to help you check your grip.

Golf grips also come in different materials and even mult-compound materials.
Cord grips for example have a material or cord running through the rubber compound. This provides a secure grip in all weather conditions but can feel a bit harder and tougher on the skin than softer materials.
Some people prefer the wrap style grip which looks as if a strip or leather has been wrapped around the golf shaft in a spiral pattern.
There are also many choices of colour to allow you to personalise your clubs.
Please see the greenseekerglf.com guide to changing your own golf grips - it's quite easy to do and new grips can transform a good set of irons which are not living up to their full potential because of slick, worn or hard old grips.
