Advice on choosing new golf clubs

Golf clubs can be a big investment and it helps to be well informed. Here is some advice about what to look for and some help with the jargon and technical terms.

The design of the golf club

A typical golf club consists of three main components. Club head, shaft and grip. You will find many options to choose from different manufacturers. Most manufacturers, retail shops and Golf Professionals will offer a fitting service where you can select the appropriate combination to match your game and budget with their trained advisers help. You can also have the golf grip, loft, lie and length of the clubs tailored to your specification. In many cases these fitting services are free of charge or the value of the service is sometimes discounted from the price of the club(s). Even if you decide to buy online you should go and try out a similar club or set of clubs first.

General tips on buying golf clubs

Shop around, including browsing the internet.Talk to your local Golf Professional or local Golf retail shop - ask for their advice (advice is usually free).Try before you buy - we recommend you try clubs on a range and not just trying out in the net in the shop. You need to see the trajectory and shape of shot. It's very important that you like the look of your golf club's and that they instill confidence. It's also very important that you get a shaft that is suited to your swing speed - if you are inbetween options then consider going for the more flexible and / or lighter shaft rather than the heavier and / or stiffer shaft.
